Dalam tahun-tahun kebelakangan ini, penyalahgunaan opioid telah diiktiraf sebagai krisis nasional, sering menjadi tajuk utama dan mendorong tindakan perundangan di peringkat negeri dan persekutuan. Menurut Pusat Kawalan dan Pencegahan Penyakit, hampir dua juta rakyat Amerika menyalahgunakan atau bergantung kepada opioid pada 2014, dan lebih ramai orang mati akibat dos berlebihan pada tahun itu berbanding mana-mana tahun dalam rekod.
